This volume presents such an assessment as well as a critical perspective on the current state of Women’s Studies in Türkiye. Most of the thirty-five contributing authors are pioneering and well-known scholars in the field and have already published widely on the topic; however, among them are also young, but no less important feminist scholars.

It has been thirty years since Women’s Studies emerged as an academic field in Türkiye. One may argue that this period is too brief to allow for the proper establishment of a scholarly tradition. Yet, this is a timely juncture to reflect on the distance covered by Women’s Studies in academia, to examine what has been and what still needs to be accomplished, and to assess the current situation.

This volume presents such an assessment as well as a critical perspective on the current state of Women’s Studies in Türkiye. Most of the thirty-five contributing authors are pioneering and well-known scholars in the field and have already published widely on the topic; however, among them are also young, but no less important feminist scholars.

Each essay discusses, from the vantage point of the respective author’s discipline, the topics, perspectives, research findings, authors and interpretations of the past thirty years. Through the earlier literature, the topics of study and the research findings covered in these essays, there emerges an extremely broad range of relevant issues—from women’s history and methodological considerations in women’s studies, to debates in medical ethics. Women’s life experiences, problems, biographies and autobiographies, oral history and memory, as well as the various forms of female labor are addressed here. Moreover, the volume examines the national and international status quo of the protection of women’s legal and human rights; sexism in literature, media, and the arts; the city, space, and the body; and difference aspects of the women’s movement in Türkiye. If Only an Inch… will serve as a reference work for readers who wish to familiarize themselves with the development and current status of Women’s Studies in Türkiye.
