This book, a collection of ethnographic articles, based on a decade of field research in the Yuntdağ region in Western Anatolia, explores socioeconomic change in one village. Chapters explore the construction of tradition and modernity in rural areas, the role of development projects in social transformation, marriage rituals and kin relations, rural-to-urban migration, anxieties about socio-economic difference, and religious practices. The author, Kimberly Hart, conducted extensive research as a participant-observer in the village between 1998 and 2008. The village, Örselli, is home to a women’s carpet-weaving cooperative, the DOBAG project. The author documents the development and successes of the program as well as its gradual contraction as young women choose to become urban housewives rather than weavers. Given Hart’s position as a speaker of Turkish and scholarly “outsider” this book is an important source for scholars and students in anthropology, sociology and related fields. Moreover, it will appeal to anyone curious about daily life in a rural village in Western Anatolia.

Kimberly Hart teaches socio-cultural anthropology at Buffalo State College, State University of New York.
