Recaizade Mehmet Celâl’s work Hayal-i Celâl is quite an interesting discovery. Published about 20 years prior to the so-called “first novel in Turkish” Araba Sevdası, which was written by Celâl’s younger brother Recaizade Mahmut Ekrem, Hayal-i Celâl was presumably forgotten with the death of the author at a young age. The text which was discovered, translated, and simplified by Engin Kılıç, can be considered as a “proto-novel” despite Mehmet Celâl’s attempt to qualify it as a “novel”. The book includes Assoc. Prof. Erol Köroğlu’s introduction, the original text, and the simplified version along with the translation.
