Serap is a novel of internal reckoning blending the crisis caused by political pressures and the “crisis of masculinity.” A young man, who failed to make the most out of the “freedom” that accompanied the Constitutional Monarchy because the Period of Tyranny destroyed his spirit, is dragged into a mid-life crisis as his forgotten desires are triggered by the beautiful woman he encounters on the ferry.
In this novel serialized in Resimli Roman magazine in 1909, Mehmet Rauf in a sense records in literature the history and the experiences of the individual who is the subject of that history. Published with facsimiles of the illustrations in the original text, 110 years later Serap is offered to today’s readers.
